Requirements for
Teaching
The Texas Catholic
Conference Education Department sets the following minimum requiremnts
for teaching in the Catholic Schools in Texas:
PreSchool
An Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education
or
a Bachelor's Degree with 12 credit hours in Early Childhood Education
K - 5 Self-Contained Classroom
A Bachelor's Degree with 12 credit hours in professional education
coursework. Courses must fall into the category of: Educational
Technology (required), Developmental Psychology, Learning Theory,
Elementary or Secondary Curriculum, Classroom Management or Teaching
Methods.
Departmentalized Grades 6 - 8
A Bachelor's Degree with 12 credit hours in professional education
coursework (as described above), 18 credit hours in the primary teaching
subject, and 12 credit hours in any additional subject taught.
Grades 9 - 12
A Bachelor's Degree with 12 credit hours in professional education
coursework (as described above), 24 credit hours in the primary teaching
subject, and 12 credit hours in any additional subject taught.
Specialized Instructor
A Specialized Instructor, degreed or non-degreed, in the area of
competency, e.g. fine arts, music, drama, foreign language, or physical
education, may be employed at the elementary level if necessary. The
principal must apply to the Director of Catholic Schools for a one-year
Specialized Instructor Certificate. The teacher is expected to remove
the deficiency within 2 years in order to continue teaching in the
Catholic Schools of Dallas.
Deficiency Plan
If necessary and with prior permission of the Director of Catholic
Schools, a teacher with a Bachelor's Degree who does not meet the
requirements for professional education coursework or subject credit
hours, may be hired under a Deficiency Removal Plan. Except in special
circumstances, the teacher is given 2 years to complete the requirements
set forth in the deficiency plan in order to continue teaching in the
Catholic Schools of Dallas. Courses which qualify to remove a deficiency
in professional education coursework may be taken at any college which
is listed as "accredited" by the U.S. Department of Education. The
University of Dallas offers these courses in its summer Dallas Area
Network for Teaching and Education (Dante) Program especially for
Catholic school teachers. A course
